Welcome to the unique hand-made qualities of Ethical Beds. Ethical beds are a new take on designer furniture: chunky, rugged beds made from solid wood, each one unique, distinctive and hand-made, taking about a month to complete. However, this is not new wood, recently felled, being used for the frames: the timber used in each bed has had a previous life - old roof purlins, factory joists, marine timber. In a world where our carbon footprint is becoming much more important, the primary power source used in the making of these beds is simple elbow grease! All beds are designed to fit standard mattress sizes and are sold with mattress not included, and excluding delivery and installation charge (varying from free delivery in Greater Manchester, to £200 to the furthest reaches of the British mainland). Payment is by cheque for the deposit then the balance in cash on delivery. If you are within travelling distance of Bury, the beds can be viewed by arrangement without any obligation to buy. Henge Bed 2 - King Size, 120 kg, £850
Henge Bed 3 - King Size, 150kg, £1000 (Could be reduced to King Size.)
SOLD Well not strictly true - the inner subframes and mattress slats are made from new timber from renewable sources. But the vast majority - the chunky rustic timbers - originally had other purposes, be it supporting house roofs and factory floors or as part of a pier or sea defences, maybe. They have all served their original purposes well as part of the social history of Northern England, spent some time languishing in salvage yards or on the foreshore of the Mersey, and now have a new role as a key feature of Ethical Beds. The Design There are clearly influences drawn from Stonehenge in the design of the headboard, making it a striking and unique design. It struck me that a headboard need not be a typical timber panel, but could be something sculptural in its own right. After all, if we are sitting up in bed do we necessarily need a huge rectangle of panelled wood to lean against? There are also Stonehenge influences in the use of large mortise and tenon joints, as there are at the top of the stone pillars in Wiltshire. The corner pieces are joined to the side and end beams by four-inch mortise and tenon joints; at the ends the joints are then glued and pinned whilst the side beams are bolted in to allow the beds to be taken apart and moved. The end result is a sense of the massiveness of the bed combined with a "rock solid" feel devoid of squeaks and movement in the frame (no matter what you're doing!) So if you are looking for a bed which is a statement of your individuality, an altar to the pleasures of sleep and sex and lie-ins, which has a sense of history as well as excellent green credentials, which is more architecture than furniture, a Henge Bed from Ethical Beds is certainly what you are looking for.
